Butterflies

On Friday Abigail came home from school with a butterfly she had saved. It apparently had a damaged wing and was missing it's pixie dust. She decided to nurse and then set it free because if she left it at school a "bird would surely get it." It died on Saturday. Yesterday when we walked in from Church she disappeared very quickly and came back solemnly with her butterfly box and asked if we could have a "funeral" for her pet butterfly and if we could also keep out church clothes on for this solemn occasion. Her dad said yes as I had that "you've got to be kidding me" look. We went out to the back yard and she preceded to dig a hole. Her brothers decided to help and it went down hill from there. At seven she forgets that boys like to dig and play in the dirt....especially after being in church for 3 hours. She finally got the thing buried and wanted us to say a few words. I said "it was a pretty butterfly", Matthew her 5 yr old brother said "it was a stupid butterfly". More screaming and then Abigail insist we all go inside to give her a minute. I gave her 30 seconds and then sent the boys back out...who began to dig around her..more screaming...apparently she was afraid that they where going to exhume the body. I finally sent her down to her room to calm down and change out of her Church clothes. When she came back I asked why she was so upset and she explained that "her only pet died". I suggested she go look on plant leaves for butterfly eggs.....Yeah she found one and all was well. She took the egg to school and it disappeared. Mean while back at home Matthew found a caterpillar that he named Roly Poly. When Abigail saw it she decided it needed a last name...Butfly. Yes she decided to leave off the "er" sound. Matthew who was truly offended decided Abigail could not babysit "Roly Poly" while he was at Aikido. The joys of motherhood!
